Rising Tide Laundry Room
HOME ADDITION IN CARLISLE, MA
Designed in collaboration with Kathy Boudreau, this Carlisle project is a good example of what can happen when an addition is used to solve a problem that a standard renovation cannot. The existing laundry room was a windowless storage closet with no natural light and no room to function properly. The solution required extending an existing dormer and relocating a furnace to a newly finished attic, freeing up the closet space and giving the new laundry room the footprint and light it needed.
That kind of structural work has to be planned carefully from the beginning. Extending a dormer affects the roofline, the interior ceiling height, and how natural light enters the space, and all of those considerations were worked through in the design process before construction began. The furnace relocation added another layer of coordination, requiring the attic to be properly finished before the new layout could come together.
The finished room features Platt Cabinetry built-ins, a farmhouse sink, subway tile backsplash, and generous counter space for folding. What started as a storage closet is now one of the most functional and well-finished rooms in the house, made possible by an addition that gave it the space to become that.
Older homes throughout Carlisle and the surrounding Middlesex County communities often have spaces that were never meant to serve the functions they have ended up with. The laundry room is one of the most common examples. When the existing footprint cannot be fixed from within, the right answer is usually to change the footprint itself.
