Connected With History
GARAGE ADDITION IN CONCORD, MA
Designed in partnership with Battle Associates Architects, this Concord property presented an interesting design challenge. A large barn already sits on the grounds, and the clients wanted a modern garage that connected directly to the home without the new structure pulling attention away from either the house or the existing barn. Battle Associates worked out the site placement and orientation carefully, with the garage angled so the home remains the clear centerpiece of the property when approached from the long circular driveway.
The garage connects to the home by way of a covered pillared walkway finished in copper detailing, giving the two structures a physical and visual link that feels considered and permanent. The copper is a material choice that will develop character over time, sitting naturally alongside the history already present on the property rather than standing apart from it.
Getting the siting right on a project like this matters as much as the building itself. A garage placed or oriented without that level of thought can work against a property, and on an estate with this much existing character, that would have been a real loss.
Concord has more properties with that kind of history than almost anywhere else in the region. Homes here sit alongside barns, carriage houses, and stone walls that have been part of the landscape for generations. Adding to a property like that requires a different kind of care than a standard addition, one where the new structure earns its place rather than simply occupying it.
Platt Builders works with homeowners throughout Concord and surrounding Middlesex County communities including Lexington, Carlisle, Lincoln, and Acton on custom garage and addition projects. If you are looking to add to a property with history worth protecting, get in touch.
