Home Remodeling & Custom Building in Concord, MA
Thirty Years of Craftsmanship in the Town We Know Best
Concord is where Platt Builders does our deepest work. With multiple completed projects spanning antique colonials, mid-century modern homes, and contemporary renovations, no town in our portfolio has more of our craftsmanship in its neighborhoods. Each project here tells a story about taking a Concord home and making it work beautifully for the family who lives there.
Concord’s housing stock is unlike any other town on our service map. Founded in 1635, it holds homes from nearly every era of American residential architecture: pre-1700 First Period structures along Lexington Road, Federal-era farmhouses, Colonial Revivals and Cape Cod cottages from the 1920s through 1940s, the remarkable Conantum neighborhood designed by Carl Koch, scattered Deck Houses from the same mid-century era, and more recent construction throughout the outlying neighborhoods.
Since 1992, Platt Builders has helped homeowners across Massachusetts renovate, expand, and reimagine their homes through thoughtful design and careful craftsmanship. As an employee-owned cooperative, every member of our team has a stake in the quality of your project. We listen carefully, plan thoroughly, and build it right.

The Home Styles and Remodeling Challenges We See Most in Concord
Concord’s housing stock is unlike any other town on our service map. Founded in 1635, it holds homes from nearly every era of American residential architecture, and our portfolio reflects that full range.
The oldest homes, in Concord Center and along Lexington Road, date to the First Period (pre-1700) and Federal era. These are timber-frame structures with massive chimneys, floor plans organized around a central hearth, and the particular challenges of antique home ownership: period-appropriate restoration, discrete systems upgrades, and careful coordination with the Historic Districts Commission. Projects like Anti-Aging in an Antique demonstrate how we approach these homes: respectfully, with craft that matches the original, and with modernization that serves the family without erasing the history.
Colonial Revival and Cape Cod homes from the early 1900s through the 1940s are plentiful throughout Concord’s established neighborhoods. Well-built but often with small kitchens, limited bathrooms, and layouts that don’t accommodate modern family life. This is where most of our kitchen, bath, and laundry/mud room work happens.
Concord also has a remarkable collection of mid-century modern homes, including the Conantum neighborhood designed by architect Carl Koch and numerous Deck Houses from the same era. Projects like Mid-Century Master show how we update these architecturally significant homes: replacing original finishes where needed, improving energy performance, and respecting the original architects’ intent.
More recent construction from the 1980s through 2000s fills developments on the outskirts. Structurally sound but often with dated layouts and builder-grade finishes. Projects like Executive Function and Level Up show how we reimagine specific rooms within these homes for how today’s Concord homeowners actually live, especially as more people work from home.

Concord Permitting and Historic District Expertise
Concord has six historic districts administered by the Historic Districts Commission. If your home sits within one of these districts, any exterior change, including additions, architectural features, fences, and color changes, requires a Certificate of Appropriateness from the HDC before a building permit can be issued.
Concord also has a Demolition Review bylaw applicable to historically and architecturally significant buildings town-wide, not just those within historic districts. We identify whether the bylaw applies early and build review timelines into every project where it does.
Beyond preservation review, standard building permits run through Concord’s Building Department. We’ve been working through Concord’s review processes for years. We know the commissioners, the expectations, and how to prepare applications that move through efficiently.

Frequently Asked Questions: Concord, MA Remodeling
Q: Is my Concord home in a historic district?
A: Concord has six historic districts administered by the Historic Districts Commission. If your home is within one, exterior changes require a Certificate of Appropriateness. We confirm district status early in every project and manage the HDC review process.
Q: What if my home isn’t in a historic district but is still historically significant?
A: Concord’s Demolition Review bylaw applies to historically and architecturally significant buildings town-wide, not just those within historic districts. We identify whether the bylaw applies to your property early in the feasibility process.
Q: Can you renovate an antique Concord home?
A: Yes. Our Concord portfolio includes significant work on antique and period homes. Anti-Aging in an Antique is a bathroom project that demonstrates our approach: respectful modernization, craft that matches the original, and systems upgrades that serve the family without erasing the home’s history.
Q: Can you work on a Conantum or Deck House?
A: Yes. Concord’s mid-century modern homes, including the Conantum neighborhood and Deck Houses, have specific renovation needs. Our Mid-Century Master project shows how we approach these architecturally significant homes: modernizing where needed while respecting the original architects’ intent.
Q: How long does a whole-house renovation take in Concord?
A: Most large renovations take 4 to 8 months of construction. HDC review and permitting can add significant time to the front end, which is why we begin those steps as early as possible.
Q: Do you build custom cabinetry for Concord projects?
A: Yes. Platt Cabinetry, our in-house shop, builds custom cabinetry and millwork for every project. Clients are welcome to visit our 14,000 sq ft facility in Ayer to see the work in progress.
