ART STUDIO REMODELING IN CARLISLE, MA
Platt Builders was already on-site for another project in this Carlisle home when the conversation turned to the client's need for a dedicated art studio. The answer was directly overhead. An unfinished heated attic space was converted into a full working studio, with rafters lifted to open up the feeling of the room and a window enlarged at one end to bring in more natural light.
The studio is divided into two distinct halves. One is dedicated entirely to the client's artwork, anchored by a 6'6" x 9' work table built on casters so it can be broken down into four pieces and rolled out of the way for gatherings or art displays. The two ends of the table mirror each other in layout, with the same drawer, counter, and seating configuration on both sides, but each is specialized for a different medium: one for pastels, one for watercolors. Tiger maple countertops run throughout, with a fully integrated easel and multiple power outlets built directly into the surface. Platt Cabinetry, our in-house millwork team, built custom storage that keeps art supplies visible and within reach while the client is working, including extra-deep cabinetry built into the eaves, accessible by a library ladder.
The other half of the studio serves as a social and creative gathering space. A locally crafted iron railing and powder room sit at the center of the floor plan, with custom barn doors finished in rippled glass and leather-wrapped brass handles concealing a vibrant wallpapered interior. Glass transoms sit at the top of the powder room for light. A small kitchen area with a sink, microwave, mosaic tile, and integrated workspace was built in to give the client a dedicated space for keeping brushes and supplies clean. A dual-corner fireplace, game table, custom furnishings, and cabinetry round out the space.
Attic conversions in Carlisle and across the surrounding Middlesex County communities are among the more rewarding projects we take on. The space is already there, already heated in many cases, and already part of the home. What it needs is someone willing to see the potential before the finished floor goes in.
